ManyChat vs Wave: inbound or outbound Instagram automation?
I get this question a lot: "Isn't Wave just like ManyChat?"
Not really. They both automate Instagram DMs, but they go in opposite directions. ManyChat answers people who come to you. Wave goes to people who don't know you yet.
Once you see that, picking one (or both) gets easy.
What ManyChat does
ManyChat is built on Meta's official messaging API. It shines at inbound: someone interacts with you, and ManyChat replies instantly.
Someone comments "GUIDE" on your post, they get a DM with the guide.
Someone replies to your story, a flow starts in their DMs.
Someone sends a keyword in DM, they get the right answer, a link, a booking page.
It's great at converting attention you already have. Creators with a big audience use it to turn every post into a lead machine.
The limit comes from the API itself: the user has to make the first move. ManyChat can't message someone who never commented, replied or wrote to you. I explain the rules in detail in can you send cold DMs with the Instagram API?
What Wave does
Wave is built for outbound. You don't wait for people to come to you, you go to them.
Wave finds the leads: followers of your competitors, people who liked or commented on specific posts, lookalikes of your best customers, hashtags.
It filters them so you only keep the profiles that fit.
It sends the first DM and the follow-ups, personalized with AI, and stops as soon as someone replies.
It runs in the cloud with browser automation, simulating how a real person uses Instagram, with safety in mind: warmup, city-level proxies, progressive pacing. Your computer can be off.

Which one do you need?
Pick ManyChat if
You already have an audience that comments and replies, and you want to answer faster and turn that engagement into leads.
Pick Wave if
You don't have that audience yet, or your buyers aren't following you. You need to start conversations with the right people, consistently, without spending your days in the DMs.
Or use both
Honestly, that's the best setup for a lot of businesses. Wave starts conversations with new prospects. Some of them follow you, comment on your posts, reply to your stories. And that's where ManyChat takes over.
Outbound fills the top. Inbound converts what comes back.
One thing to know before you start
Inbound tools are safe by design, because people asked to be contacted. Outbound needs more care: send to people who actually fit, stay within safe daily limits, and keep links out of the first message.
And if you have no audience but like the comment-to-DM idea, there's a way to do it on other people's posts: how to do Instagram comment-to-DM without an audience.
