How to do Instagram comment‑to‑DM without an audience?

3 min read

You've seen the move: a creator posts "Comment GUIDE and I'll send it to you", hundreds of people comment, and a tool DMs every one of them. It's called comment-to-DM, and it works really well.

If you have an audience.

If you post to 300 followers, nobody comments "GUIDE". So here's the version that works when you're starting from zero.

The idea: use other people's comment sections

Somewhere in your niche, a bigger creator or a competitor just posted about the exact problem you solve. Under that post, people are asking questions, saying "I need this", sharing their struggles.

Those comments are public signals of interest. Each one is someone telling you, in writing, "this topic matters to me right now".

So instead of building the audience first, you borrow the conversation that's already happening, and you continue it in their DMs.

Pick the right posts

This is 80% of the result. A great message sent to the commenters of the wrong post won't save you.

  • Right topic. The post should be about the problem you solve, not just your general niche. A post about "getting your first coaching clients" beats a motivational quote from a coach.

  • Recent. Last 1 to 2 weeks. After that, people have moved on and won't remember commenting.

  • Real comments. Questions, "how?", "interested", people describing their situation. Skip posts full of emojis and "🔥".

  • No giveaways. "Comment to win" posts are full of people who want a free prize, not your offer.

Competitors' posts work too. People commenting there are literally shopping for what you sell. That's the logic behind stealing leads from competitors in Wave.

What to send

The comment is your icebreaker. You don't have to invent one: you know what they care about, and when.

Three rules: mention the post, not their exact words (quoting them back feels creepy). Bring something useful. End with an easy question, not a pitch.

1. They asked a question

Hey {firstname}, saw your question on {creator}'s post about {topic}. I deal with this every day, so quick answer: {one useful tip}. Want me to send you the full breakdown?

2. They shared a struggle

Hey {firstname}, noticed you're working on {goal} (saw your comment on {creator}'s post). I helped {similar person} get there by {method}. Curious, what's blocking you the most right now?

3. They just showed interest

Hi {firstname}, saw you're into {topic} from {creator}'s post. I put together {resource} on exactly that. Want me to send it?

No link in that first message. Send it once they say yes, otherwise your DM might land in hidden requests. For more angles, the "Comment Goldmine" strategy in my 10 DM templates goes in the same direction.

Doing it by hand vs with Wave

By hand, it works like this: open the post, read the comments, open each profile, check if it fits, write the message, send, note it somewhere, follow up in 3 days. Fine for 10 people. Painful for 100.

With Wave, you paste the post links and Wave collects the people who commented (or liked). Filters keep only the profiles that fit (followers range, bio keywords, account type), AI icebreakers personalize each message, and follow-ups go out automatically, with safe pacing. Same strategy, without the spreadsheet.

I do the same thing for creator lists, if that's your use case: how to find influencers at scale.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Posts older than 2 weeks.

  • Sending the exact same message to everyone. Vary it.

  • Pitching in the first message. Start the conversation first.

  • Messaging everyone who commented, including the "🔥" crowd. Filter.

Then, build your own

Do this for a few weeks and something happens: the people you talk to start following you. Your posts get comments. And one day, you can run the classic "comment GUIDE" play on your own content.

Until then, other people's comment sections are the best lead list on Instagram. Wave helps you use them.
