Open to a quick idea?
If you've ever tried to build a lead list from Instagram, you've probably met PhantomBuster. It's one of the best-known scraping and automation tools out there, for LinkedIn, Instagram and more.
Wave scrapes too. The difference is what happens next. PhantomBuster gets you data. Wave gets you data and conversations, in the same place.
What PhantomBuster does on Instagram
PhantomBuster works with "Phantoms", small automations you run on a schedule. For Instagram, the main ones extract data:
a profile scraper (bio, followers count, category, contact info when public),
a follower collector,
hashtag search and post extractors,
plus some actions like auto-follow, auto-like and auto-unfollow. You connect your Instagram account, feed it a list, and get a spreadsheet back.
It's flexible, and it covers many platforms, which is great if you build your own workflows. On Instagram it stays careful on volume: PhantomBuster's own docs recommend processing around 100 profiles per day across all Instagram Phantoms.
Where the spreadsheet stops
A list isn't outreach. Once you have your CSV, you still need to:
clean it and keep only the profiles that fit,
write messages that don't sound copy-pasted,
send them at a safe pace,
follow up, twice, at the right time,
stop when someone replies, and track who did.
So you end up with two tools, an export, an import, and a spreadsheet in the middle. That's where most people stall, and the DMs never go out.
What Wave does
Wave is built for Instagram only, and it covers the whole chain, from scraping to reply:
scrapes the audience directly: followers of any account, people who liked or commented on specific posts, keywords and mentions,
filters it: followers range, bio keywords, account type, activity, with AI filtering on top,
writes the messages: AI icebreakers and variations, so no two DMs look alike,
sends DMs and follow-ups in the cloud, with warmup, proxies and human-like pacing,
tracks replies and stops the sequence automatically.
No export, no import. The audience you build is the audience you message.
Side by side
PhantomBuster | Wave | |
|---|---|---|
Instagram lead scraping | Yes | Yes, with filters |
Messages and follow-ups | Not the focus on Instagram | Built in, personalized with AI |
Output | A spreadsheet of profiles | Conversations with leads |
Platforms | LinkedIn, Instagram and more | |
Best for | Custom multi-platform workflows | Instagram outreach, end to end |
So, one tool or two?
One tool (Wave) if Instagram is your outreach channel. You get the scraping and the sending in the same place, and nothing falls between the cracks. I show how to build good audiences in how to generate leads on Instagram and how to find influencers at scale.
Two tools if you already run PhantomBuster workflows across several platforms, say LinkedIn and Instagram in the same process. Keep them, and upload your Instagram CSV into Wave to handle filtering, messages and follow-ups.
